Nutrition

Nutrition is the science and study of the relationship between diet and states of health and disease.  We have all heard the adage “You are what you eat.” Greater numbers of people value that truth and are becoming more nutritionally savvy.  Close to 50 percent of the population now uses nutritional supplements daily.  We now understand why enhancing certain nutrients and using natural products can make a positive difference in our health and well-being.  We are eating leaner meats and more fruits and veggies.  Yet, growing numbers of people are out of shape, overweight, inadequately nourished and ill.

One thing is clear.  A tremendous need exists for better nutrition and better ways of enhancing well-being and preventing disease.

Dietitians

Dietitians base their approach on diet-related research, focusing on calories, quality of food (freshness, sanitation, freedom from contamination), meal planning, and specific diets for certain conditions.

Nutritionists

Nutritionists are defined by the concept of nutrition.

Nutrition: “The sum total of the processes involved in the taking in and utilization of food substances by which growth, repair, and maintenance of activities in the body as a whole or in any of its parts are accomplished – including ingestion, digestion, absorption, and metabolism (assimilation).”  Taber’s Medical Dictionary

Certified Clinical Nutritionists base their approach on up-to-date research in these areas.  CCN’s receive a highly sophisticated background in complementary and alternative healthcare.

A major role of the CCN is to consider how foods are digested, absorbed, and assimilated, and ultimately how food affects the body biochemically.  Dietitian and nutritionist Deborah Zorensky does this by considering gastrointestinal health, neurotransmitter response, immune function, metabolic shifts and balances, allergenic or sensitivity reactions, and systems and pathways of detoxification.

Each person is seen as having a unique make-up and may be evaluated based on genetics, digestive efficiencies, stress response patterns, liver detoxification capabilities, present disease states and other clinical profiles.  This allows for a diet and supplement protocol that is correct for you.
